Seed Collection and Storage Workshop

Gardeners!

Here’s your chance to learn another way to save resources and money. Green Spaces is holding our second work(ing)shop of the year.

Seed Collection and Storage

Saturday, May 8, 2010 from 9am to 12pm

Community Gardens of St. Therese

906 W. Kentucky Avenue (behind the Basilica of the Little Flower, near Zarzamora and Culebra)

At this workshop, we will have Josh Greene from the St. Andrew’s Seed Bank with us to discuss:

1. the philosophy and reasons for saving seeds;

2. how to ensure good quality seeds;

3. common techniques for preparing seeds for storage; and

4. best storage practices.

The presentation will include hands-on opportunities for you to

1. identify seeds that are ready to harvest;

2. select seeds from various vegetables, herbs and flowers;

3. remove seeds from pods, fruit, etc.;

4. start the cleaning process for the various types of seeds;

5. start the drying process for seeds; and

6. figure out which simple tools you already have for proper storage.

As donations come in, participants may go home with seeds, seed saving envelopes and containers.

We look forward to spending time in this garden with representatives from all 25 community gardens.

Pass the word. Everyone must RSVP for this free and open-to-the-public workshop!

The former HEB site on Presa Avenue will soon be home to the District 5 One-Stop Senior Center. A Dollar General will also be moving into the building and will have a section of groceries. District 5 Councilman David Medina and District 3 Councilwoman Jennifer Ramos hope to build on this investment in our community to further develop the area and bring in other businesses that will serve all residents in the surrounding neighborhoods. Members of the Roosevelt Park Neighborhood Association addresssed City Council to convince them of the need for this facility in our area.

National Night Out

The Roosevelt Park Neighborhood Association will again be participating in the National Night Out celebration on October 6, and can use your help. As you know, we do not collect any type of membership dues and typically serve what members volunteer to donate.

We plan to serve hot dogs on buns with hot dog sauce; the franks will be provided by Councilwoman Ramos.

We also plan to serve watermelon, chips and punch and either a pinata or candy bags for the young ones; we hope to also have gift cards for adults and items for kids as door prizes.

If you can and would like to donate one of the above items for the celebration, be certain that we would certainly appreciate it! ... a bag of chips, a can of hot dog sauce, a bag of candy....a bottle of mustard, etc. Please let me know if you can give us a helping hand.

A most sincere Thank you!

Fritos recipes

The empire that is Frito-Lay got its start in the Roosevelt Park Neighborhood in 1932, when Charles Elmer Doolin bought the recipe for Fritos from a Mexican man who was selling bags of the little fried masa that was already popular on Mexican beaches.

Louise of the Months of Edible Celebrations blog wrote a brief and includes some of her favorite recipes for Fritos. Click here.
