Thinking about the future of San Antonio

What will san antonio look
like in 10 years?

That’s largely up to you. SA2020 is a community-wide effort to chart San Antonio’s course for the next decade. Education. Transportation. Quality of life. We can make progress by realizing all of these issues are interconnected and by setting priorities to tackle them. Through the process of coming together as a city and speaking up, we’ll be able to map our priorities and decide what kind of community we want to be in 2020.

The future starts here.

Garden Safety and First Aid Certification

Hello, Gardeners!!

Do you want your garden to be a place where
·         the produce is nutritious to eat,
·         the paths are clear to wander,
·         the grounds are risk-free for picnicking and somersaulting,
·         the air smells fresh because it is fresh,
·         gardeners and visitors can retreat from our unrelenting urban environs,
·        and everyone departs from the garden feeling healthier and happier?

Green Spaces is offering its third work(ing)shop of 2010 to help you take steps in this direction!

Garden Safety and First Aid Certification
Saturday, July 31, 2010
9:00 am to 12:00 pm
Gardens of St. Therese, 906 W. Kentucky** (behind the Basilica of the Little Flower)
$15 for the first participant ($35 for the second)*
RSVP required!

The work(ing)shop will consist of:
1.       A garden walkthrough to give participants experience recognizing and addressing potential safety hazards.
2.       A licensed instructor to provide hands-on demonstration of the tools and techniques used to respond efficiently to accidents.
3.       Handouts that list ways to assess and make safety improvements to community gardens for the whole community’s benefit.
4.       One first-aid certification per participant so fellow gardeners feel at ease knowing that one of their own will be helpful in case of accident.

Please identify at least one of your garden members to attend this upcoming work(ing)shop and encourage him or her to RSVP as soon as possible. You, your fellow gardeners, your families and friends, and even the random passerby will greatly benefit from enlisting this representative to bring these lessons back to your garden.

Put it on your calendar and reply today!

National Night Out

The Roosevelt Park Neighborhood Association will again be participating in the National Night Out celebration on October 6, and can use your help. As you know, we do not collect any type of membership dues and typically serve what members volunteer to donate.

We plan to serve hot dogs on buns with hot dog sauce; the franks will be provided by Councilwoman Ramos.

We also plan to serve watermelon, chips and punch and either a pinata or candy bags for the young ones; we hope to also have gift cards for adults and items for kids as door prizes.

If you can and would like to donate one of the above items for the celebration, be certain that we would certainly appreciate it! ... a bag of chips, a can of hot dog sauce, a bag of candy....a bottle of mustard, etc. Please let me know if you can give us a helping hand.

A most sincere Thank you!

Household Hazardous Waste

Don’t let cleaning products go down the drain!
San Antonio’s HHW mobile event provides residents with safe venue to dispose of hazardous materials!

When you are finished using household cleaners, paint, lawn and garden products, or automotive fluids remember not to pour them down the drain, empty them in the trash, or dispose of them on the ground. Instead, bring them to the City's Solid Waste Management Department's mobile household hazardous waste event (HHW) on Saturday, June 6 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Dub Farris Athletic Complex, Loop 1604 at Hausman.
Items labeled "toxic", "corrosive" or "flammable" can be dangerous and should be properly disposed.  This HHW event provides residents with a convenient opportunity to properly dispose of these materials, such as paint, motor oil, antifreeze, pool chemicals, batteries, pesticides, aerosol cans and florescent light bulbs. If possible, these items should  be kept in their original containers. If containers are deteriorated or leaking, transfer materials to a safe container and label the new container to correctly identify the contents.
This event is open to San Antonio residents who are customers of the Solid Waste Management Department. Please bring a picture ID and current CPS Energy bill showing “Environmental Fee” as proof of residency. At this event the following items will not be accepted: explosives, ammunition, fireworks, medical waste, industrial/commercial waste, radioactive materials, electronics, tires, trailer loads and large quantities of materials.
If you are unable to make it to the HHW mobile event, residents are encouraged to drop off their HHW items at the City's permanent facility  located at 7030 Culebra Road which is open Fridays 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturdays 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
For more information on the HHW mobile events and the permanent facility visit, www.sanantonio.gov/swmd.
