The former HEB site on Presa Avenue will soon be home to the District 5 One-Stop Senior Center. A Dollar General will also be moving into the building and will have a section of groceries. District 5 Councilman David Medina and District 3 Councilwoman Jennifer Ramos hope to build on this investment in our community to further develop the area and bring in other businesses that will serve all residents in the surrounding neighborhoods. Members of the Roosevelt Park Neighborhood Association addresssed City Council to convince them of the need for this facility in our area.

Grown in Your Own Backyard Event

Get tips on community gardening and buying locally grown produce at an event called “Grown in Your Own Back Yard” on Sunday at Pearl Stables.

Texas Public Radio and the Green Spaces Alliances of South Texas have teamed up to stage the free event, which includes speakers, cooking demonstrations and exhibitions.

Organizers hope to build on the growing interest in local produce and farmers markets to get more backyard and community gardens going. The event will run from 1 to 4 p.m.

Southtown needs a grocery store to call its own

Thank you Elaine Ayo, for drawing attention to Southtown's desperate need for local grocery store in a recent Express-News article.

There are so many grocers out there; the options go way beyond HEB. In fact, the range of people in Southtown, overall, might make it a unique challenge, but surely there are chains out there that are up to it.

H.E.B. R.I.P.

The Presa Street H.E.B. is closed. It's a big change in our neighborhood, and there's not much of a silver lining in it, either.
Here's a story sent to us from a neighbor, that perfectly captures the new, sadder, reality.

This morning was our family's first experience with the new H-E-B. We woke up and realized we were running out of milk for baby.
"I'll just run to the ... " My husband's voice trailed off as we both remembered that we'd never be able to walk down the street to pick up a couple items from the H-E-B #6 again.
But baby needed milk, so he gamely hopped in the car to drive to McCreeless.
More than 20 minutes later, my phone rang. It was my husband. He was standing in a horrendous line, with his three measly items. Every register has a long line, every customer a full basket.
Even the express-lane was packed. He waited patiently for another 10 minutes before getting to the cashier.
When he finally arrived home -- almost an HOUR after he left -- we opened the Express-News to read the front-page story about the new H-E-B.
What's that, there's an Azteca, a Fiesta and a Culebra Meat Market nearby?
You can bet we'll be visiting them all soon.
