Roosevelt Park Neighborhood Association Meeting!

So much is happening to our neighborhood and we'd like to get back in the habit of meeting regularly.  Our next neighborhood meeting will be Thursday, August 9 from 6:30 pm to 8 pm at the Roosevelt Park Community Center. Some of the things we'd like to discuss include:

1) The City's new Lone Star Community Plan - http://lonestarcommunityplan.org/

According to the website:

The Department of Planning and Community Development (DPCD) has accepted the recommendation of the Downtown Strategic Framework to develop a path for the evolution of the Lone Star Community from an industrial past to a future for arts, entertainment, and creative living spaces.  The plan will consider and develop strategic action steps to address the key themes in the strategic framework including: (1) support quality housing and mixed-use development, (2) improve street and river systems, (3) create destination open space, and (4) construct rail quiet zones to improve quality of life.  This planning effort will focus on the area’s potential for growth and redevelopment.

The site also has a map of the area and lists the dates of upcoming meetings:
July 10, 24, 31
August 7

2) The sale of Lone Star Brewery.  Many of you have also heard that the Brewery is under contract (again).  Let's get together as a neighborhood to talk about what we would like to see develop - http://www.mysanantonio.com/business/article/Lone-Star-site-in-contract-3650212.php

3) The October 25 Power of Preservation party at the CPS Mission Road Power Plant - http://www.sanantonio.gov/historic/Docs/Events/Release_PROM_Feb2012.pdf

4) The upcoming construction for the Mission Trails project along Roosevelt.

5) The fatal shooting at the Royal Inn Motel at 1500 Roosevelt - http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local_news/article/Man-gunned-down-at-South-Side-motel-3677297.php

6) Our fabulous neighborhood website/blogspot which has not been maintained since 2011 and NEEDS A VOLUNTEER!! - http://rooseveltpark.blogspot.com/

Councilwoman Ramos asks for Southside community input

District 3 Councilwoman Jennifer Ramos wrote an op-ed in today's Express-News,

"Now as we approach a new bond cycle, I am looking forward to working with the residents of my district in addressing the needs, challenges and possibilities that exist for the Southside.
The 2012 bond is estimated to surpass the previous bond package with a total of $596 million to be used for large-scale, multi-phased projects that would otherwise take decades to fund and construct."

Fiesta! Time!

Roosevelt Avenue Renovations

It may not be the most glamorous renovation happening in the neighborhood, but it is profound!  Road workers and engineers are putting their final touches on a year-long project replacing the sewage main beneath Roosevelt Avenue with a big, bright and shiny new pipe!
In this picture, workers are laying a new asphalt surface for the Avenue.
The neighborhood is improving, from the bottom up!

Roadblock to Rejuvination on Roosevelt Avenue

Reporter Peter Holley of the Express-News writes about the motel lawsuit currently affecting three motels on Roosevelt Avenue (further south than our neighborhood) accused of being havens for prostitution and associated crime.  Holley interviews the owner of the Everkleen Motel, and city and law enforcement officials.

Roosevelt Avenue named after Teddy, not FDR

Though a much-extended Roosevelt Avenue has become an important thoroughfare, it started as a mere “driveway to the fairgrounds,” according to the San Antonio Express, Sept. 14, 1899, referring to the San Antonio International Fair and Exposition. To be planted with two rows of shade trees, the new roadway “(would) be known as Roosevelt Avenue in honor of Col. Roosevelt, whose famous Rough Riders were organized at the fairgrounds.”

COME ON DOWN TO THE RIVER TODAY!!

The Lone Star/Roosevelt Park hike and bike trail opens officially today! Join us for guided educational tours offered by the San Antonio River Authority about the project and the ecosystme restoration. The four tours are as follows:

10:15 a.m. (led by Lee Marlow), 10:45 a.m. (led by Matthew Driffill), 11:15 a.m. (led by Lee) and 11:45 a.m. (led by Matthew) on December 18th.

The tours will start near the little covered pavilion and basketball court along the Mission Reach trail on the east bank of the river in Roosevelt Park, head south along the east bank to the first pedestrian bridge, cross over and head back north to Lonestar Blvd., cross back over and return to the pavilion. It’s a short walk, but I think it provides ample time and opportunity to educate the attendees about all the wonderful ecosystem restoration taking place along the Mission Reach as well as describe the recreational opportunities. SARA has also installed a series of educational signage to help tell the story of all the facets of the Mission Reach and ecosystem restoration. This educational signage will be in place until the additional permanent project signage is installed later in 2011.
